I have an 86 944 Turbo and my shifter was getting more and more sloppy when in gear.  It was so bad that when a friend would drive it it was in gear and they were asking why the entire gearbox felt like neutrals.  If you have a similar experience you have a football where a cylinder should be.  What does that mean you may ask check out the picture below.  The little tapered football shape that sticks out of the gear select lever should not look like that.  It should be a nice straight cylinder shape.  Luckily it is a cheap and easy fix.  all it takes is a small flat head and a 13 mm socket with a 6 in extension.  Just pop the shifter boot off and pull off the knob and you will see the two 13's you will need to remove to make the swap.  the only parts required are the new shifter and a plastic bushing, both available through Above All Motorwerks.
